The theme of this years Pedagogy Study Group session is the role of musicology in community engagement. How can we, as musicologists and teachers, most effectively convey our insights to interested non-professionals, both within the university and without? In collaboration with members of The Philadelphia Orchestra Association, we will devote this session to highlighting and discussing successful means of employing musicological research to engage and enlighten general audiences about music.
The session will have two invited panelists: Ayden Adler, Director of Education and Community Partnerships at The Philadelphia Orchestra; and Richard Freedman, Professor of Music at Haverford College and longtime presenter of pre-concert programs for The Philadelphia Orchestra and the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society.
We would like to fill out the panel by welcoming proposals for presentations, demonstrations, and/or discussions on the following topics related to our theme, as a means of starting a dialogue with the AMS members in attendance:
1) Both innovative and tried-and-true means of conveying musicological insights to general audiences
2) What live performance has to offer the musicologist in trying to reach non-specialist audiences
3) Creative outreach or general education approaches and projects in communities and universities, including interdisciplinary endeavors
4) Novel approaches to addressing issues related to a specific composition, namely, Tchaikovskys Symphony no. 4, to be performed on The Philadelphia Orchestras Saturday evening program, November 14th, before a general audience
Presentations should be 20 to 30 minutes in length. Please submit proposals by June 20, 2009, including a title, an abstract of 250 words, and your name, email address, and phone number, as well as any audio-visual requirements, to Anne-Marie Reynolds (reynolds at geneseo.edu) by June 20, 2009.
