The Hampsong Foundation Announces the SONG OF AMERICA Wiki
The Hampsong Foundatioin is very grateful to a large number of AMS members for sending us word of interest in helping with research at for the Song of America project. We had hoped there would be considerable interest and that a person would emerge who was ideal for the relatively modest task that we were proposing. In the event something even better happened: we were quickly overwhelmed with the volume of the response and quality of the respondents. Both gave us considerable pause, making it clear that a different approach was called for. We simply couldn't leave so many members of the musical and scholarly community out of something that was always intended, by its nature, to be broad-based and representative of elements in our society and its history that no one -- or even a few people -- however well informed, could be expected to cover adequately.
Therefore, at this stage, we've decided to pursue a characteristically 21st-century, new-media approach to the initial question of a representative repertory. At later stages there will be opportunity for special research, but at this point it seems in the spirit of the topic and of the participation of our great national Library of Congress to use the wiki approach. We hope you will participate in the garnering in off this harvest of song and that you will stay in touch with the Song of America during its entire length and breadth and take advantage of the growth of our fledgling effort. There will be enough work for everybody.
The URL for participating in the first stage by submitting your ideas and contributions is
