I am delighted to invite you to an upcoming presentation by the
Beethoven and American music scholar Michael Broyles, distinguished
professor of music, professor of American history, and a fellow of the Institute
for the Arts and Humanities at Penn State University. Dr. Broyles will give
a free lecture on:

"'Beethoven Was Black.' Why Does It Matter?"
THURSDAY, February 12th
Schiro Program Room, 5th Floor, Martin Luther King Library, San Jose
7:30-8:30 p.m.

Dr. Broyles is currently working on a book about Beethoven in America. His
lecture is based on his research for one of the chapters. Some of you may
remember that there was an important incident at Stanford several years ago
about whether Beethoven was indeed “black” or not-Michael will talk about this
incident and others concerning this fascinating and controversial history of the
topic in the United States.

Dr. Broyles is the author of several important musicological studies, including _Beethoven:
The Emergence and Evolution of Beethoven’s Heroic Style_ (Routledge, 1987).

Please do join us Thursday evening. Looking forward to seeing you,

William Meredith, PhD
