Post-doctoral fellowship in musicology for the academic year 2009/2010

The FABRICA project (FAux – BouRdon, Improvisation et Contrepoint mentAl) is offering a one-year postdoctoral fellowship for the academic year 2009/2010.

FABRICA aims to investigate the repertories and performing traditions variously called ‘faux-bourdon’, ‘improvised counterpoint’ or ‘cantare super librum’ as a specific case study in the broader context of orality and literacy in musical creation, as well as the relationships between improvisation and composition in Western music. As a result, FABRICA will undertake systematic research into the polyphonic practices of ecclesiastical chant, from the first appearance of faux-bourdon and improvised counterpoint treatises until the last evidence of such practices around the middle of the 20th century. 

One of the principal goals of the project lies in the creation of a database giving access to a catalogue of sources, in particular those of the French Faux-bourdons (16th-20th century) and European theories of improvised counterpoint (15th-18th century).

The FABRICA project is hosted by the University of Toulouse – Le Mirail (France). It is sponsored by a grant from the Agence Nationale de la Recherche (ANR) for the period 2009-2012, and develops a scientific partnership with the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona (Spain) and the Ensemble Gilles Binchois (France).

Ideally, candidates for this position will already have worked on musical sources in their dissertation (Middle Ages to 19th century) and will speak and write French fluently. The fellowship requires the fellow to work at Toulouse within the research group in charge of the program.

Responsibilities: building the catalogue of sources and helping to create the FABRICA database ; participating in the organization of conferences in Toulouse and Barcelona ; developing a documentary body of sources and secondary bibliography.

Period of employment : from September 2009 to August 2010.
Salary : E 1600 / month.
