NOTICE OF VACANCY

Position: Assistant Professor in Music Theory, Tenure Track

Responsibilities: Teach required lower division undergraduate music theory courses and occasional elective courses in
music theory at both the undergraduate and graduate levels as well as lead the musicianship and pedagogy program.
Assist in retention of music majors. Develop a body of published research that will lead to a strong national reputation
as well as advancement in rank with tenure. Clear potential for achievement in research and publication is essential.

Rank & Salary: Assistant Professor; Salary = $42,000. This is a full time probationary position leading to a tenure
decision.

Appointment Begins: August 17, 2009.

Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. in Music Theory or Music Theory/Composition. College or university teaching
experience at a graduate assistant level or above.

Preferred Qualifications: Strong commitment to teaching. Teaching experience at the university level as a faculty
member. Background in Cognition of Music and Music Theory Pedagogy. Record of publication by music theory
journals or scholarly organizations. Record of presentation at conferences or scholarly venues.
Interview: Two or more finalists will be invited to the University of New Mexico to lecture, teach, and meet students
and faculty and interview with the search committee and administration.

Application: Applications must include: (1) signed letter of application; (2) a detailed vita; (3) names, addresses,
phone numbers, and e-mail addresses of three to five professional references; (4) a list of courses or subject areas
previously taught or within candidate’s ability to teach, together with syllabi; (5) transcripts indicating terminal degree.

Only complete applications will be considered.

Semifinalists will be asked to submit: (1) a video demonstrating teaching of musicianship class (aural skills) and a
separate theory class (written skills); (2) three writing samples, such as professional publications, dissertation chapters (maximum of two chapters), or presentations before professional music theory, composition, or psychology societies.

The University of New Mexico is a tricultural institution with an enrollment of 26,000 students. The Department of
Music, one of six units in the College of Fine Arts, has 300 music majors and is accredited by NASM. Degrees offered
include the Bachelor of Music in performance, string pedagogy, theory and composition, music education, and jazz
studies, the Bachelor of Arts in Music, and the Master of Music in performance, music history and literature, theory
and composition, music education, conducting, and collaborative piano. There are fifty-six full-time and part-time
faculty members.
