Announcements for the AMS ams-announce at list.bowdoin.edu
Tue Oct 7 12:48:10 EDT 2008

I am writing to let you know of a very important event taking place as a joint conference between the Special Collections of Dimond Library and the UNH Music Department concerning the life and music of Amy Beach. Amy Beach was born in Henniker, NH in 1867 and went on to have a very important and international career as both a composer and a concert pianist. She was soloist with the Boston Symphony at age 18. Her evolution as an artist in the Victorian Era is a fascinating study of the interaction between culture and innate musical artistry.

The UNH Opera program will present a concert of over twenty of her songs and her only opera, _Cabildo_, with original scoring, in conjunction with a presentation by two of the most eminent scholars of women in American music, Adrienne Fried Block, author of _Amy Beach, Passionate Victorian,_ the most widely read and utilized biography of Amy Beach, and Judith Tick of Northeastern University, author of Women in Music for the New Grove Dictionary of Music.

Adrienne Fried Block, who is now 87, has graciously agreed to come to UNH as the keynote speaker for the event. This is a great honor and clearly, this event will now honor Adrienne's work as well as that of Amy Beach.

Judith will then lead an open discussion. This scholarship portion will take place on:

Saturday November 15 from 3:00- 5:00
Fifth floor of Dimond Library.
Concert following in Bratton Recital Hall at 7:00

Dinner will be available for those attending the afternoon event.

Please join us for a very rare gathering of scholarship and beautiful music presented by UNH students to explore a fascinating subject, the life and work of Amy Beach.

Further information will be posted soon at the UNH Department of Music website: <http://unh.edu/music/>http://unh.edu/music/

Thank you,
Professor David Ripley, Music Department, UNH
Professor William Ross, Director of Special Collections, Dimond Library, UNH
