ASSISTANT PROFESSOR - ETHNOMUSICOLOGY

Description:  The School of Music at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign seeks a dynamic, interdisciplinarily minded scholar-musician of the highest intellectual, creative, and pedagogical potential.  Teaching and research specializations will complement and lend new direction to existing emphases within a vitally integrated musicology program whose faculty regularly interface with many distinctive cross-campus institutions and activities. These include seven federally funded National Resource Centers for area studies, similar centers for ethnic and gender studies, the newly established Center for World Music, cutting-edge symposia and colloquium series, and a vibrant array of performance ensembles and events. 

Proposed Starting Date:  August 16, 2009 

Duties:  Establish a record of professional excellence through innovative scholarship and publication; contribute to the teaching of diverse interdisciplinary music courses, such as focused courses in the area of specialization and graduate seminars targeting contemporary topical, theoretical, and methodological issues in ethnomusicology; supervise and mentor theses and dissertations; provide service, such as advising, committee membership, and public outreach.

Rank and Salary:  Regular, full-time tenure-track position (pending budgetary approval); salary based on qualifications and experience.

Qualifications:  Ph.D. completed by August 16, 2009 expected.  Demonstrated evidence of scholarly potential, a commitment to college-level teaching (experience expected), and the ability to engage critically with the discipline's literature, theoretical issues, and methodologies expected.  All areas of specialization will be considered.
