MUSIC AND THE HANSEATIC LEAGUE | MUSIC IN HANSEATIC CITIES OF NORTHERN/CENTRAL EUROPE AND THE BALTIC AREA (C. 1350 - CA. 1650)

At this conference, musicologists and historians will discuss musical life in hanseatic cities of Northern/Central Europe and the Baltic area (c. 1350- c. 1650). The focus is on the direct relations between the Hanseaetic League and music (e.g. concerning the evolution of certain musical genres, the dissemination of musical repertoire, international traffic of composers and musicians, developments in civic musical life and professional associations of musicians, etc.). The role of music in the daily life of hanseatic cities, or within the
framework of the hanseatic league (music at private/civic festivities and ceremonies, music on hanseatic ships, music to welcome trading delegations, inaugurations of new buildings or ships, etc.) is another central theme. The international traffic of Franco-Flemish polyphony through the network of hanseatic relations will also be given special attention.


Papers may examine matters of
- sociology of music - music and economics
- music life in towns  - town musicians - guilds and civic organisations
- sources
- repertoire of relevant sources and its direct connection to the specific context of the Hansa - composers (local-international)
- evolutions in use of instruments, musical styles and genres
- patronage (town - private patronage - merchants)


We invite proposals for panel sessions as well as for individual papers of twenty-five minutes in the form of an abstract not exceeding 300 words to be sent as an e-mail attachment to Sofie Taes (sofie.taes[at]arts.kuleuven.be) by 1 June 2008. Notification of acceptance will be given by 15 June. The conference programme will be available from 25 June on. The preferred conference languages are English and German.
