The New Zealand School of Music, a joint venture of Massey University and Victoria University of Wellington, seeks applicants for an appointment as Lecturer in Contemporary Music and Culture. The position will be based at Victoria University in Wellington, New Zealand’s capital city.

The New Zealand School of Music is deeply committed to the idea of music as an essential human activity that informs our contemporary social interactions and multiple identifications in powerful ways. Traditional areas of strength within the School in jazz and classical performance, composition, musicology and ethnomusicology and more recent emphasis in areas such as music technology and film music studies highlight the breadth of the NZSM’s engagement with contemporary musical practice and music of the recent past. The NZSM is now poised to consolidate and make further advances in one or more of these areas or to bring in new areas of expertise to enhance and complement those already in place. The field of expertise required for this position is open and may be grounded in a number of areas: creative, critical, performative, theoretical or historical. Whilst the field of expertise remains flexible, the applicant should have a wide-ranging perspective on music and musical
 cultu
re from the twentieth century until the present day and will be expected to teach and conduct research in some aspect of contemporary musical life. An interdisciplinary perspective, reflecting the multiple facets of musical practice in contemporary culture and bridging boundaries between academic study and creative practice, would be an advantage.

The successful candidate will have a PhD or DMA in the appropriate area of expertise, teaching experience at university level, and evidence of the ability to maintain a profile of international distinction in research and/or creative practice. Responsibilities will include teaching and supervision at undergraduate and graduate level (and in particular, the yearly introductory course on music in contemporary life) and contributing to the general administration of the School. Appointments will commence on 1 February 2009.
