[AMS-announce] AWARD: NECMT Prize

The New England Conference of Music Theorists is very pleased to announce the NECMT Prize, for which scholars of all ranks are invited to submit short essays concerning the topic “Reminiscence in Music.” 

Submitted essays may focus on any aspect of this subject that the author deems relevant.  Possible areas of inquiry might include, but are not limited to, quotations of or allusions to previously composed music (including self-quotations), homages, cyclic music, or operatic reminiscence motives.

The NECMT Program Committee will choose three finalists whose essays it considers most outstanding and of value to the music theory community.  The finalists will read their essays at a session of the next annual meeting of NECMT, to be held April 24-25, 2009 at Yale University.   The winner, to be decided by the Program Committee after that session, will be awarded a $250 prize, have their written essay archived on the NECMT website, and receive three years' membership to NECMT.

Submission Guidelines:

1. Submissions should be completed essays in publishable form, between 3500 and 4500 words.  Authors should also include all necessary references, musical examples or explanatory diagrams; these will not be included in the word total.  As all essays will be read blind, there should be no direct reference to the author’s name, although the author’s own previous work on the topic may be cited in the references.

2. Four paper copies of the essay, double-spaced and with a 12-point font throughout, should be submitted postmarked by January 15, 2009 to:

3. In addition, an electronic copy of the essay should be sent in PDF format, with examples in a separate PDF file, to: auerbach at music.umass.edu by January 15, 2009.  The titles of these files should include the author’s last name.
