Lectureship in Music 

Salary £28,290 – £31,840 

We wish to appoint a Lecturer in Music, starting at the beginning of the academic year 2008-9, who will specialise in the place of music in contemporary culture. Since the early 1990s, Southampton's Music department has pioneered the inclusion of contemporary music making in the curriculum, whether through performance, composition, or musicology; we now propose the appointment of a lecturer to bring a range of activities into alignment. 

The new member of staff will join a contemporary team that includes Professor David Nicholls (American music from Ives to Cage; British rock and pop), Dr Jeanice Brooks (music in romance), Dr Danuta Mirka (contemporary Polish music), Professor Michael Finnissy and Dr. Michael Zev Gordon (composition of contemporary concert music), Matthew Scott (Head of Music at the Royal National Theatre; composition for stage and screen), Dr. Andrew Fisher (composition of film music and popular song; arranging), and Dave Marchant (Head of Jazz and Popular Music Studies).

You will have a background in musicology, ethnomusicology, or the sociology of music, and a proven track record of publication in that field. More importantly, you will have a strong intellectual grasp of the principal issues affecting contemporary musical life, straddling the boundaries between creation, performance, and academic study, and between music and other cognate disciplines. You will also be well able to communicate your views to a broad undergraduate and postgraduate student body, and to produce notable new research relating to the whole field of music in contemporary culture.
