The Thornton School of Music at the University of
Southern California is searching for a full-time
Lecturer in its Department of Musicology for the
2008-2009 academic year. A likely teaching load
in the fall term (August 25 until December 17) will be the following:
Music and Culture (MUHL 315x), Mondays and Wednesdays, 2:00-3:20
For undergraduate non-music majors. This is a
survey of Western music and the music of selected
non-Western cultures, all placed in a broad cultural and historical context.
Research Materials and Techniques (MUHL
570): two sections (Mondays 12:00-1:50 and Thursdays 12:00-1:50)
This class is taken by incoming graduate music
majors in all programs. It develops strategies
for information retrieval, evaluating sources of
information, and writing about music.
The teaching for spring term (January 12 to
mid-May 2009) has yet to be determined but will
be comparable to that for the fall term 2008.
Qualifications for the position are:
- a PhD in musicology in hand by August 1, 2008;
- relevant and successful teaching experience on
the college or university level;
- a record of research and publications in musicology;
- special expertise in teaching about research
techniques, bibliography, and technical writing.
