The University of Basel, Humanities Faculty, invites applications for a Professorship in Historical Musicology with a specialty in Medieval and/or Renaissance music. The professorship will be filled as Full Professor, Associate Professor (with tenure), or Assistant Professor (tenure track), depending upon the qualification of the successful candidate. If the position is filled at the Assistant Professor level, the appointee will be evaluated for promotion to a tenured professorship after five years (at the latest).

The appointee to this professorship will have an outstanding record in teaching and research and will be able to represent the profile of the Basel Musicological Institute on the international stage. She/he will contribute to the disciplinary and interdisciplinary development of the subject within the Humanities Faculty. The successful candidate will be expected to shape and innovatively develop the profile of musicology in Basel with its dual emphasis both in research and teaching on early and on new music history. This takes place in cooperation with the Music Conservatory of Basel/Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, especially with regard to the realization of combined Bachelor/Master studies. In addition, candidates should be prepared to take on administrative duties within the university.

The language of instruction and administration is German.

As the University of Basel seeks to increase the number of women in professorial positions, applications from women are encouraged. The University of Basel offers attractive terms of employment, a modern infrastructure and a stimulating academic environment in a small to medium-sized department (www.unibas.ch).

Applicants with excellent qualifications and experience are requested to submit the standard documentation (curriculum vitae, list of publications, list of courses taught, a description of current and future projects) before October 31, 2007, to the:

Dekanat der Philosophisch-Historischen Fakultät
der Universität Basel
Bernoullistrasse 28
CH-4056 Basel
Switzerland.

The position begins on February 1, 2008.
