Tenure Track Position in Music Theory to begin Fall, 2008

Mannes, a division of The New School, announces a search to fill the newly created Edward Aldwell Professorship in The Techniques of Music.  The successful candidate will be a musician of depth and accomplishment (with a record of significant publications or comparable professional achievement) who is experienced in and dedicated to teaching Schenkerian music theory and analysis at the college level, and who will participate in implementation and long-range development of the Techniques of Music curriculum at Mannes.  Proficiency in Schenkerian theory and analysis and experience in teaching intensive courses to develop the abilities of performance students to do analyses on their own is essential.  The Edward Aldwell Professor will be willing to work within the established Mannes curriculum and participate in the development of that curriculum over time, will have leadership potential, and will participate in ongoing discussions and decisions about the relation of the conserv
 atory
 curriculum to the broader curricular concerns of the university as a whole.  Additional areas of specialization and teaching ability that may enhance candidates' applications include:  20th-century music history and/or analysis; advanced ear training, keyboard harmony, and score reading; composition; music history; or performance). 

Qualifications: An earned doctoral degree in music theory, completed by the time of application, or a record of comparable achievement, as well as at least five years teaching music theory and related topics at the college level, and an appropriate record of professional accomplishment (refereed publications or comparable achievement in composition or performance).  Candidates who are ABD at the time they apply will not be considered.  Salary competitive based on experience.  Rank open.  Tenure track or Extended-employment track.  A final candidate currently holding tenure may be considered for tenure upon appointment.  Comprehensive benefits package.
