Chair of Music, University of the Witwatersrand

The Wits School of Arts, at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa, is seeking to make an appointment with effect from 1 July 2008, or as soon as possible thereafter. Applicants from any of the following fields would be welcome: historical musicology, popular music studies or (applied) ethnomusicology, though ideally we seek someone whose experience and interests traverse these fields. The division of Music is increasingly focusing on contemporary musical cultures and practices within the interdisciplinary framework that the School of Arts encourages. The successful candidate will be expected to have at least part of his/her teaching and research focused on Africa. As chair he/she will be expected to provide intellectual leadership to Music, to expand graduate studies, to establish research programmes and to source external funding. The candidate should have a research standing within the discipline of Music. Please note: the position is for a tenured
  full
professorial Chair and not necessarily for a Head of Music.

The Wits School of Arts provides a unique and multidisciplinary environment for the teaching of the performing and visual arts. It offers three specialised undergraduate degrees and a number of postgraduate offerings in its six academic divisions: Arts, Culture & Heritage Management; Digital Arts; Dramatic Art; Music; Television & Film Studies; and Visual Arts. The successful candidate will join a dynamic group of academics and professionals who are committed to a vibrant academic environment.

Enquiries about the position can be made to the Head of School, Professor Gerrit Olivier (Gerrit.Olivier at wits.ac.za; +27 (0)11 717-4605).

Remuneration: The University offers a generous and flexible package including a provident fund, medical aid, housing subsidy and dependents’ bursaries. The package will be negotiated in relation to qualifications and experience.

To apply: Submit a letter of motivation and detailed curriculum vitae with names and e-mail addresses of three academic referees as well as certified copies of degrees/diplomas, supporting documentation and identity document to: Mrs Molly Orr (Molly.Orr at wits.ac.za), Human Resources Manager, Faculty of Humanities, University of the Witwatersrand, Private Bag 3, Wits 2050, South Africa.

Closing date: 30 November 2007
