Since its start as the Berkshire Music Center in 1940, the Tanglewood Music Center has become one of the world's most influential centers for advanced musical study. The Tanglewood Music Center Fellowship Program offers an intensive schedule of study and performance for advanced instrumentalists, singers, conductors, and composers who have complete most of their formal training in music. According to recent estimates, 20 percent of the members of American symphony orchestras, and 30 percent of all first-chair players, studied at the TMC. Prominent alumni of the Tanglewood Music Center include Claudio Abbado, Luciano Berio, Leonard Bernstein, David Del Tredici, Christoph von Dohnányi, Jacob Druckman, Lukas Foss, Osvaldo Golijov, John Harbison, Gilbert Kalish (who headed the TMC faculty for many years), Oliver Knussen, Lorin Maazel, Wynton Marsalis, Zubin Mehta, Sherrill Milnes, Leontyne Price, Seiji Ozwa, Ned Rorem, Cheryl Studer, Sanford Sylvan, Michael Tilson Thomas, Dawn Up
 shaw,
Shirley Verrett, and David Zinman. Today, alumni of the Tanglewood Music Center play a vital role in the musical life of the nation.
