[AMS-announce] CFP: Messiaen 2008 International Centenary Conference, Birmingham, UK, June 21-24, 2008

UCE Birmingham Conservatoire, the University of 
Sheffield and the Royal Scottish Academy of Music 
and Drama are pleased to announce an 
international conference to celebrate the 
centenary of the birth of Olivier Messiaen and 
provide an opportunity for scholars interested in 
his music to share their knowledge and deepen 
their understanding of all aspects Messiaen, his 
music and his influence. The conference will be 
held at Birmingham Conservatoire, in the heart of 
Birmingham, on 21-24 June 2008.*

We welcome proposals for papers of no more than 
20 minutes on any aspect of Messiaen’s life, 
work, and influence. Some areas that the 
organisers would particularly welcome include:

reception history
analysis
genesis of works and source studies
Messiaen’s place in twentieth-century music
Messiaen's teaching legacy

Proposals should take the form of an abstract of 
up to 300 words, accompanied by any relevant 
audio or video material if appropriate, and full 
contact details including email, telephone, 
postal address and institutional affiliation (if 
any). If special equipment is needed it would be 
useful to the organisers to note that in the 
proposal. Please submit your abstract by Friday 
22 June 2007 via email to: messiaen at uce.ac.uk.

Presentations will be reviewed and selected by 
the conference committee and decisions will be 
announced by the end of August 2007.

Christopher Dingle (Birmingham Conservatoire)
Peter Hill (University of Sheffield)
Nigel Simeone (University of Sheffield)

*Birmingham Conservatoire will be presenting a 
concert of Messiaen’s orchestral works on Friday 
20 June, and conference registration will open on 
the afternoon of Friday 20 June.
