Vocality Symposium
University of Virginia
April 6-7, 2007
While singing is ubiquitous in most music worldwide, neither music
scholarship nor vocal pedagogy offers a standard way to analyze vocal
sounds and thus the terminology scholars use remains inconsistent and
poorly defined. This workshop will bring together scholars of vocal
music to analyze sounds and production values and agree on terminology.
We will be joined by scholars Heather Hadlock, Gabriel Solis, and Lara
Pelligrinelli, as well as an experienced popular music singer and studio
technicians of several genres of vocal music to lead discussion on the
singing styles they know best, as well as address analytical approaches
offered in central, difficult texts, such as Roland Barthes? ?The Grain
of the Voice? and Theodore Adorno?s ?The Curves of the Needle.?
