As part of an expansion of its professional administration, the
Society for Ethnomusicology seeks applicants for a full-time Executive
Director to start September 1, 2007. The Executive Director, who
reports to the Executive Board, plays a significant role in moving the
Society forward in ways consistent with the long-range plans of the
Society. As the chief administrative officer, the Executive Director
provides leadership and management for all Society activities in
consonance with SEM policies set by the Executive Board. The
Executive Director coordinates the business of the Executive Board and
Society committees; oversees publications; maintains contact with SEM
sections and other internal constituencies; represents the Society to
external constituencies to increase its public profile; designs and
manages programs and services to actualize the vision of the Board;
and cultivates contacts in the philanthropic community and among
funding agencies to create new financial resources to support the work
of the Society. The Executive Director supervises and has the support
of a full-time Business Office Coordinator.
Based at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, the Society for
Ethnomusicology is the premier academic society for ethnomusicologists
in the world. Founded in 1955, its mission is to promote the field of
ethnomusicology and the work of ethnomusicologists within and beyond
the academy. The Society for Ethnomusicology is multidisciplinary in
concept and worldwide in scope with a growing membership of over 2600
people and institutions.
A successful candidate should have an advanced degree in
ethnomusicology or a related field, strong administrative and
financial experience, excellent writing and speaking skills, proven
leadership abilities, computer literacy, attention to detail,
diplomacy, and tact. Experience in grant writing and development work
is desired. The position will require travel to annual SEM meetings,
conferences, and conference site evaluations as necessary.
Salary will be commensurate with ability and experience. The position
is a full-time 12-month, non-tenure-track appointment that includes
the standard fringe and health benefits package provided to Indiana
University faculty. The position will have a 3-year contract
(renewable). The new Executive Director is expected to commence work
