"Is this it all?": Questioning received truths in music
The University of Toronto Music Graduate Student Association is pleased to host our annual conference March 16th and 17th, 2007. This year's conference focuses on the act of questioning in all fields of musical inquiry. Papers may explore new areas of research, or revisit old ones. We encourage submissions from graduate students in musicology, ethnomusicology, theory, education, performance, and composition. We welcome proposals for lecture-recitals in addition to conference papers.
Renowned literary theorist and opera scholar Professor Linda Hutcheon will deliver, with Dr. Michael Hutcheon, this year's keynote talk. The pair have co-authored three books on opera: Opera: The Art of Dying, Bodily Charm: Living Opera, and Opera: Desire, Disease, Death. Professor Hutcheon has also authored more than a handful of books on her own, including The Politics of Postmodernism (1989).
Participants and attendees may also take in a performance of Benjamin Britten's The Rape of Lucretia, from which the conference takes its name, by the Faculty of Music's esteemed opera program as part of conference activities.
When: The 2007 MGSA conference will take place on the evening of Friday, 16 March and all day Saturday, 17 March.
Where: The Faculty of Music, University of Toronto, Toronto, ON, Canada.
Please submit a proposal of no more than 500 words by 2 February, 2007 either online at our conference website (http://uoftmgsa.com), or by mail at the following address:
