CALL FOR PAPERS

East-West connections in music since 1950

Kingston University, Friday 21 September 2007

Kingston University Music Department is hosting a one-day conference on East-West links, fusions and connections in contemporary music. The event will be attended by musicologists, performers and composers working in the field, and the day will end with a concert by the renowned Indonesian pianist Ananda Sukarlan, who will perform works ranging from Debussy to Takemitsu to British premieres by Indonesian and Malaysian composers. Papers on the music of contemporary East Asian composers, or contemporary Western composers inspired by East Asian musics or traditions, will be presented. Proposals for lecture-recitals, or from composers, are encouraged: please contact the conference organiser, Dr Caroline Potter, with any queries about proposed presentations.

This conference is organised in conjunction with a concert celebrating the 50th anniversary of Malaysian independence from the UK on Wednesday 14 November 2007 in Cadogan Hall, London SW1, by the London Sinfonietta. This concert will feature the world premiere of a piano concerto by the Malaysian composer Tazul Tajuddin, Benjamin Britten’s Curlew River and the first performance of a short work commissioned from Britten by the Malaya Government in 1956. Proposals for papers relating to Britten’s interest in East Asian musics or to the contemporary Malaysian musical scene are therefore particularly welcome.

All proposals for papers (which will normally be 20 minutes long) should be sent as a Word attachment to C.Potter at kingston.ac.uk. Please send an abstract of 250 words by Thursday 31 May 2007.
