Sound, Music, and the Moving Image

Call for papers, compositions, and round table discussions

The conference theme is ‘Sound, Music and the Moving Image’, and we intend this in the broadest possible sense. Bringing together practitioners and scholars from various disciplines, the conference will provide the opportunity to reflect on and challenge prevailing approaches to the sound/music and moving image relationship, and also to propose new directions in this dynamic field.  We hope that submissions will reflect work being carried out in the widest variety of musical traditions, cultural contexts, and methodological approaches.

The conference will take place between Monday 10th and Wednesday 12th September 2007 at Senate House, London, United Kingdom. 

Keynote addresses will be provided by Professor Anahid Kassabian (University of Liverpool) and Professor Richard Dyer (Kings College, London).

There will also be a keynote interview and composition masterclass with Academy Award nominee Dario Marianelli (Pride and Prejudice, V for Vendetta). Further details about entry for the composition masterclass appear below.  In addition, there will be an event at the Odeon Leicester Square featuring Donald MacKenzie performing on the 1937 5 manual Compton organ. 

The conference immediately precedes 'Musicology and Recordings', the combined CHARM (Centre for the History and Analysis of Recorded Music) and Royal Musical Association annual meeting (13-15 September, Royal Holloway, University of London).  

The programme committee comprises: Julie Brown (Royal Holloway University London) David Cooper (University of Leeds) Annette Davison (University of Edinburgh) Miguel Mera (Royal College of Music) Albrecht Riethmueller (Institut fur Musikwissenschaft, Berlin)

Individual Papers: Abstracts of 300 words for 20 minute individual papers on any subject relating to the interaction between sound, music and the moving image should be e-mailed, as a Word attachment, to valerie.james at sas.ac.uk. All abstracts will be considered anonymously.

Round tables: Round table organizers should provide an abstract of 700 words introducing the discussion topic for a 90 minute/2 hour presentation. All panel members must be listed (names and affiliations). The round table organizer is the chairperson and acts as moderator. Proposals should be e-mailed to valerie.james at sas.ac.uk as a Word attachment.

Compositions: Two copies of an audio CD and/or DVD of music for moving image should be submitted for consideration (paper scores are optional). No more than three pieces of work should be submitted. Shortlisted composers will receive a short movie clip (Quicktime) for which they will have the opportunity to create a new score. The completed works will be presented and discussed in a composition masterclass with Dario Marianelli. All submitted materials should be clearly labelled and must include the name and contact details of the applicant. Please send submissions to:

Deadline for all submissions: 17.00 GMT on Tuesday 27th March 2007.

The committee will make a final decision on submissions by the 1st May and contributors will be notified as soon as possible thereafter.
