The Carnegie Mellon University School of Music announces a vacancy for an Assistant/Associate Professor of Music Theory, beginning in Fall Semester 2008.
The successful candidate will be a scholar in music theory who demonstrates the potential to be an intellectual leader in the field and whose scholarly interests complement those of our existing faculty. Areas of expertise of particular interest to the search committee include: theory pedagogy, cognition, music of the last half-century, speculative theory, musical thought in intellectual history, and a range of interdisciplinary interests. A vigorous program in research in music theory resulting in national and international publications is a requirement for continuation and tenure.
This position will require a record of teaching experience and excellence. The successful candidate will teach courses in theory as part of the graduate and undergraduate sequences, including: Coordinating the undergraduate core theory curriculum; special topics courses and graduate seminars in theory appropriate to the candidate's areas of expertise; Undergraduate theory. They will also participate in School of Music, College, and University committees, faculty governance, and other related areas of service
The Ph.D. in Music Theory is required and must be in hand by August 2008.
