GAMMA-UT, the Graduate Association of Music and Musicians at UT, announces its eighth annual conference, “Music and Its Publics,” to be held on Saturday, April 12, 2008 at The University of Texas at Austin.  Graduate students from the areas of music theory, composition, musicology, ethnomusicology, and performance will meet to share their research and composers will present their works in a concert to be held that evening.  This year’s keynote speaker is Philip Tagg, from the University of Montreal.
 
Call for Papers
 
While graduate student papers are welcome on any musical topic, those relating to the theme of the conference, “Music and its Publics,” are encouraged.  Such topics might include, but are not limited to: analysis of popular music, reception history, musical analysis in cultural context, music and the market, cultural history of audiences, music and politics.
 
Please submit an abstract of 250 words or less to gammaut_at_music.utexas.edu by February 1, 2008.  Include your name, email address, mailing address, institutional affiliation and student status.  Papers are to be approximately twenty minutes in length and will be followed by a ten-minute question-and-answer session. Applicants will be notified of the program committee’s decision via email by March 1, 2008.
