St. Michael’s Cemetery in East Elmhurst, NY, will hold its third annual
Scott Joplin Memorial Concert on May 12, at 1 pm. (See
<http://mail.google.com/a/ams-net.org/http://stmichaelscemetery.com/>http://stmichaelscemetery.com/ for directions and contacts.) Admission
is free. Preceding the concert at around 12:15, in the chapel, Joplin
biographer Edward Berlin will give a brief talk about Joplin, ragtime,
and the significance of Joplin’s opera /Treemonisha/. The concert is
scheduled to be held outdoors, but in the event of rain it will be moved
into the chapel.

Performers will be, first, a trio composed of outstanding
instrumentalists: pianist Terry Waldo, banjoist Howard Alden, and
clarinetist Orange Kellin. The second part of the concert will be
handled by vocalists with piano accompaniment, presenting excerpts from
/Treemonisha. /This group of professional singers is part of an ensemble
from the Presbyterian Church of St. Albans, which had staged a masterful
performance of the opera at York College earlier this year. At the
conclusion of the concert, we will gather at Scott Joplin’s gravesite
for a memorial ceremony, presided over by Reverend Edward Davis of the
Presbyterian Church of St. Albans.

The cemetery is providing free barbecue and beverages and the organizers
would like to know how many people to prepare for, so if you plan on
attending please email <http://mail.google.com/a/ams-net.org/mailto:ed@stmichaelscemetery.com>ed at stmichaelscemetery.com

Harlem Brewing, helps to support many jazz-oriented events. She is

Scott Joplin's.
