SMT Scholars for Social Responsibility (SFSR) will be meeting during the
Los Angeles SMT/AMS. The session, chaired by Deborah Burton and
Amy Engelsdorfer, will take place:
Friday, November 3
12:00-2:00
Directors Board Room
All are most welcome to attend.
This year our topic is the study of compositions explicitly directed at particular
issues of social concern, and we will be presenting four papers that interpret
that topic in a variety of ways:
Stephanie Poxon: "His Child...Must Not Be Born": Revising Erika's
Abortion Scene in Samuel Barber's Vanessa.
Lisa Feurzeig and John Sienicki: Songs As Bumper Stickers: Whistling
One's Political Opinions in 1790s Vienna.
Lisa Scoggin: To Fight or Not to Fight: Michael Tippett's A Child of Our
Time as a Case Study for Definitions of Pacifist Music.
Ilias Chrissochoidis: A Founding Father of Social Responsibility in
Music? Handel in Georgian Britain.
There is ample time for a lively discussion, and for planning for future
meetings and activities.
SFSR is an open forum for ideas on social responsibility, of diverse
kinds; we are not allied with any one group or perspective, and all
opinions are welcome. As an entity within SMT, the SFSR complies
with the requirements of 501(c)(3) organizations; we do not endorse
partisan political statements.
