Scholar: Musicology
The Music Department of the University of California at Berkeley seeks applications for a junior-level (Assistant Professor), tenure-track position in musicology. Candidates with specialties in all fields of musicology are encouraged to apply. Among the teaching duties of this position would be a course in the Introduction of Western Music for non-majors and courses in history and criticism of music for undergraduate majors and graduate students. Candidates should be able to provide evidence of excellence in teaching and of high promise in scholarly achievement. Except under unusual circumstances, applicants should already hold a Ph.D. degree. The appointment will begin July 1, 2007, at the rank of Assistant Professor, tenure-track. Initial appointment will be for a two-year period, with subsequent renewal or promotion based on satisfactory teaching, research, creative work, and university service.

The Department of Music at Berkeley, with a regular faculty of about 20, has some 150 majors and 60 graduate students and offers courses for over 2,000 non-majors each year. The undergraduate major leading to the B.A. is an integrated one, encompassing a variety of approaches to the study of diverse musical traditions. It offers courses in theory, musicianship, composition, history, ethnomusicology, and cultural studies, as well as performance with a full complement of performing ensembles. Graduate curricula in music scholarship (ethnomusicology and the history and literature of Western music) and in music composition lead to M.A. and Ph.D. degrees. The Center for New Music and Audio Technologies fosters interdisciplinary musical research and composition.
