Two PhD studentships in Interdisciplinary Medieval Studies / Medieval Music
AHRC PhD studentship (Home or EU student)
This doctoral project will form part of a three-year AHRC-funded interdisciplinary project, Citation and Allusion in 14th-Century Songs and Motets, led by Dr Yolanda Plumley and beginning in January 2007. The successful applicant will work specifically on citational practice in late-medieval French motets; their study will involve close work on the texts and music of motets but will also consider the historical and social context of this repertory in late-medieval France. Applicants should hold a 1st Class or Upper 2nd Class Honours degree in a relevant humanities discipline (such as Music, History, or French), have competence in reading musical notation and French language, and a strong interest in the Middle Ages. The applicant should normally have a Masters qualification in an area relevant to the project. The award will cover University tuition fees; in addition, for Home students only it will also provide a maintenance award of approximately £12,300 per year for three years
. The terms and conditions of the award will be those of the AHRCs postgraduate studentships. The studentship is to begin in January 2007.
Deadline for application: November 20th 2006.
PhD Studentship (fees only, Home or EU student).
Applications are invited for a fees-only studentship (3 years) from suitably qualified graduates to work on any area of late medieval music, under the supervision of Dr Yolanda Plumley. Interdisciplinary projects involving music are especially welcome. Applicants should have 1st Class or Upper 2nd Class Honours degree and preferably a Masters qualification (or equivalent experience) in a relevant discipline. The studentship will ideally start in January 2007, but where necessary can begin later in 2007.
Deadline for application: there is no fixed deadline for this studentship, but applicants wishing to begin study in January should apply as soon as possible.

In both cases, the successful applicant will benefit from working within a lively research environment within the interdisciplinary Centre for Medieval Studies (for more details on the Centres activities, see www.centres.ex.ac.uk/medievalstudies).
