CROSS-CULTURAL MUSICOLOGIST

The Music Department at the University of California, Santa Cruz invites applications for an Assistant Professor, tenure-track position in cross-cultural musicology, with emphasis in interdisciplinary studies. The successful applicant will be conversant with the commonalities between musicology and ethnomusicology and will be engaged with studies in the music of more than one broad music culture or era. This person would be capable of teaching one or more of our new Ph.D. seminars in interdisciplinary and cross-cultural approaches to musical systems and in special topics in ethnomusicology/musicology. Preference would be given to a candidate who could also teach music theory courses. The campus is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through their research, teaching, and/or service.

The Music Department offers undergraduate programs leading to the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Music degrees and graduate programs leading to the Master of Arts degree, the Doctorate of Musical Arts in Composition, and the Doctor of Philosophy in Music. The department advocates the integration of music scholarship and performance. The Music Department is located in the Music Center which includes a 400-seat recital hall with recording facilities, special audio-equipped classrooms, individual practice and teaching studios, rehearsal space for ensembles, a gamelan studio, and studios for electronic and computer music. It is affiliated with Porter College, which is a community of students, faculty, and staff emphasizing the arts and forming part of the campus' unique collegiate structure. 

The campus operates on a schedule of three 11-week quarters per academic year. Faculty members are normally required to: 

teach five 5-unit courses per year, or their equivalent, in accordance with the department’s workload policy; 
advise and mentor students; 
actively engage in creative research/activity; and actively undertake administrative service for the department, affiliated college, and the University. 


Teaching duties may include the following: 
• M.A. and Ph.D. seminars in interdisciplinary and cross-cultural approaches to musical systems and special topics in ethnomusicology/musicology
• Course(s) in the MUSIC 11, 101, and/or 80 series 
• Music theory courses for majors or pre-majors, as qualified

RANK: Assistant Professor, Step II or III (tenure track) 
SALARY: $50,900 - $53,800, commensurate with qualifications and experience. 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The Ph.D. in Music should be in hand, or less than one year from completion, at time of appointment. Demonstrated potential for excellence in creative/scholarly work and for excellence in university-level teaching. 
(Applicants nearing completion of their doctoral dissertation should have their thesis director send a letter indicating the
projected date of completion.)
