Department of Music
University of Notre Dame
Associate Professor or Professor
Department Chairperson
The University of Notre Dame seeks a person of demonstrated excellence in teaching, research and/or performance to become Chairperson of the Department of Music. Among the requisite qualities are leadership in the areas of curriculum design, academic management, strategic planning, faculty support and mentoring, and resource development. Candidates must be committed to working in and developing the study of music in a liberal arts environment, have wide-ranging interests in music and the arts in general, and expect to influence and contribute to the diversity and character of the academic community. They will continue to pursue a scholarly program leading to publications and/or performances.
The tenured appointment begins in the 2007-2008 academic year. The area of specialization is open, but it will diversify and complement the departments existing strengths. Among the areas of priority for us are cross-cultural research in musicology (ethnomusicology), and Medieval sacred music and culture, but applicants engaged in other academic areas of research or studio specialties should apply. (See the departments website for current vacant positions.)
As the departments chief administrator, the Chairperson will be responsible for most of the Departments academic and institutional operations, including curriculum, personnel, budget, development and outreach.
The department currently offers courses leading to the Bachelor of Arts degree in Music. We offer a Masters in Sacred Music jointly with the Department of Theology, and contribute to several interdisciplinary minors. The department has fourteen regular faculty as well as visiting scholars and artists. The University of Notre Dame is a leading Catholic university. We solicit applications from Roman Catholics and persons of other religious affiliations or no affiliation. The Department and the University have made a commitment to diversity. We strongly encourage women and underrepresented minorities to apply.
Notre Dame is located in northwest Indiana, 90 miles east of Chicago. There are several venues for music performance in the community, including a 2500-seat performing arts center downtown, and excellent facilities on campus. The centerpiece is the new DeBartolo Center for the Performing Arts (see: http://performingarts.nd.edu).
Notre Dame offers competitive salaries and generous fringe benefits (see: http://hr.nd.edu/benefits/). There are also many resources and incentives for carrying out programs of research and professional development.
To apply, please mail a CV and a Letter of Application to the address below. The letter should include statements about the candidates teaching aims and research, a comment on why the candidate is interested in a position at Notre Dame, and the names and e-mail addresses of three references.
Please do not send other supporting materials until contacted. The search is now open and will continue until the position has been filled.
