Director, School of Music

Florida International University-College of Architecture and the Arts-
seeks a Director of the School of Music to lead a faculty of 
distinguished musicians, educators and scholars within a 
collaborative and interdisciplinary structure.  With 26 full-time 
faculty, including 8 Artists-in-Residence, and more than 35 adjuncts 
and staff serving over 300 music students including 50 graduate music 
majors, the School of Music offers graduate and undergraduate degrees 
with areas of study in composition, conducting, jazz, music 
education, music technology, performance, and performing arts 
management.  The School of Music, accredited by the NASM, is one of 
the most important cultural institutions in South Florida presenting 
numerous concerts, festivals, workshops, conferences, and other high-
quality musical events.  FIU is a member of the State University 
System of Florida.  It currently has approximately 38,000 students, 
1,000 faculty, and 113,000 alumni.

Responsibilities: The Director represents the School to all of its 
constituencies and is responsible for the School=92s artistic vision, 
degree programs, budget, long-range planning, the annual Music 
Festival, and faculty recruitment and development. In addition to 
managing the administrative staff, the Director is expected to take a 
significant role in budget development and fund-raising. The Director 
is also responsible for promoting the local, national, and 
international visibility of the School. Candidates must have 
outstanding leadership, management, and interpersonal skills to 
relate to a wide diversity of faculty, staff, students, and community 
members.  The Director reports to the Dean of the College of 
Architecture and the Arts.

Minimum Qualifications: Distinguished record of sustained 
professional achievement in a music discipline warranting appointment 
at the rank of full professor with tenure. Advanced degree in music 
and/or equivalent experience required.  Interest and experience in 
interdisciplinary programs. The successful candidate should have: 
administrative experience in higher education with evidence of 
increasing levels of responsibility and accomplishment; proven budget 
management abilities; effectiveness in recruitment/retention of 
faculty and students, strategic planning, and curricular development; 
effective communication and interpersonal abilities; successful 
record of promoting diversity; extensive experience in securing 
external funds and working with development personnel; and experience 
with faculty/staff evaluation and program development.
